Start with the correct Pakistan visa category
Trekking and mountaineering permits in Pakistan are now connected to the Pakistan Online Visa System. For foreign visitors, the practical first step is to apply online through the official visa portal and select the correct trekking or mountaineering purpose for the route.
Choose mountaineering when your objective is a listed peak of 6,500 meters or higher. Choose trekking for restricted-area trekking routes, including K2 Base Camp and the Baltoro/Gondogoro La corridor. If you are unsure, ask your operator before submitting the visa application because changing category later can delay the file.
Use a licensed local operator
Official PTDC guidance states that Pakistani nationals apply through a designated tour operator licensed by the Department of Tourist Services, and foreign permit files are also processed with a licensed tour company after the visa application is submitted. For K2, Baltoro, Gondogoro La, Broad Peak, and similar routes, your operator prepares the permit application, route details, member list, passport copies, and the local coordination file.
Typical documents required
- Valid passport copy for every participant
- Passport-size photo for the online visa account
- Visa application form details
- Trekking or mountaineering permit application form
- Member list for the trekking group or expedition team
- Route map or approach route for mountaineering objectives
- Climbing CV or experience summary for mountaineering applicants
- Sponsor letter or agreement from a DTS-authorized tour operator
- Insurance documents, including high-altitude rescue or evacuation cover where required
Timing: apply early
The official PTDC permit flyer says the minimum processing time is 30 days and recommends submitting at least 45 days in advance. In real expedition planning, allow six to eight weeks where possible. Security clearance, route confirmation, and fee deposits can take longer in busy summer months.
After visa submission
After the online visa file is submitted, the local tour company processes the trekking or mountaineering permit with the relevant authority. After clearance, royalty, trekking, and environment fees are deposited through the official channels. For restricted zones, no team should begin the route without the correct permit and operator association.
How K2 Expeditions & Trekking helps
We prepare the route file, member list, invitation/sponsor support, government coordination, fee deposit guidance, and local logistics from Islamabad to Skardu and Askole. For private teams, we also check whether the planned objective should be filed as trekking, mountaineering, or a custom expedition support request.
