The Golden Rule of the Karakoram

Layering is not optional. The route can move from hot lower-glacier days to freezing nights at Concordia and an early, cold Gondogoro La start. Test boots, waterproofs, and sleeping gear before arrival.

Essential: Documents & Logistics

Keep originals safe and carry printed backup copies for checkpoints.

  • Passport and Pakistan visa - Original + copies: Carry waterproof copies separately from the original.
  • Travel insurance certificate - Printed + digital: Must cover high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.
  • Passport photos - 4-6: Useful for permits, local SIM registration, and emergency paperwork.
  • Cash - Varies: USD or EUR to exchange, plus PKR for tips and small local purchases.

Essential: Clothing & Layering

A modular system for sun, wind, snow, and cold camps.

  • Base layers - 2-3 sets: Merino or synthetic. No cotton.
  • Trekking shirts - 3-4: Lightweight long sleeves are best for sun and dust.
  • Fleece or active mid-layer - 1-2: For mornings, evenings, and colder trekking days.
  • Down jacket - 1: Warm enough for Concordia and high camp nights.
  • Waterproof shell jacket and trousers - 1 set: Reliable rain and wind protection with a proper hood.
  • Trekking trousers - 2 pairs: Quick-drying nylon or softshell fabric.

Essential: Footwear

Your boots matter more than almost anything else on moraine and glacier.

  • Waterproof trekking boots - 1 pair: Must be broken in before arrival.
  • Trekking socks - 4-6 pairs: Merino or synthetic, mixed light and warm weights.
  • Gaiters - 1 pair: For dust, scree, snow, and the Gondogoro La approach.
  • Camp shoes - 1 pair: Light sandals, trail shoes, or insulated booties.

Essential: Sleeping, Bags & Packing

Porter loads need simple waterproof organization.

  • Sleeping bag - -15 C to -20 C: Choose a comfort rating suitable for cold glacier camps.
  • Expedition duffel - 80-120 L: Durable, weather-resistant, and easy for porters to handle.
  • Daypack - 35-45 L: Carries layers, water, camera, snacks, and personal medicine.
  • Dry bags - 4-5: Separate clothing, electronics, and sleeping gear.

Important: Gondogoro La & Trekking Hardware

Final requirements depend on snow and rope conditions.

  • Trekking poles - 1 pair: Very useful on moraine, descents, and river approaches.
  • Microspikes or crampons - 1 pair: Crampons are required when conditions on Gondogoro La demand them.
  • Climbing harness - 1: Needed if guides require clipping into fixed ropes.
  • Helmet - 1: Important around rockfall-prone pass sections.
  • Headlamp - 1 + spare batteries: Mandatory for the early Gondogoro La start.

Important: Health, Hydration & Hygiene

Small items prevent most common trek problems.

  • Water bottles or hydration system - 2-3 L capacity: Wide-mouth bottles work better in cold camps.
  • Water purification backup - 1 set: Tablets, drops, or filter as backup to boiled water.
  • Personal first aid kit - 1: Blister care, pain relief, stomach medicine, and personal prescriptions.
  • Sunscreen and lip balm - SPF 50+: Glacier reflection is severe.
  • Wet wipes and sanitizer - 2-3 packs: Practical hygiene for long stretches without showers.

Optional: Power, Camera & Comfort Extras

Useful items that improve comfort but are not all mandatory.

  • Power bank - 10,000-20,000 mAh: Keep warm in cold weather.
  • Portable solar panel - 1: Helpful on clear Baltoro days.
  • Camera and spare batteries - 1 set: Dust protection and lens cloth are useful.
  • Inflatable pillow or sit pad - 1: Small comfort items make long camps easier.
  • Repair kit - Small: Tape, zip ties, needle, thread, and spare buckles.
